and your back is against the wall, you don't make excuses or look for reasons not to do it...you do whatever it takes to succeed.
Our journey to compete in the 2020 Curling World B Championship took place over a 16 month period. Twice the championship was postponed because of Covid. We needed to stay mentally strong and ride out the emotional roller coaster. Ultimately it was set to take place in Lohja, Finland in April of 2021. In the months leading up to the championship, the curling clubs in CT were closed so I needed to find some ice to practice. The closest clubs with ice were two hours away. It was a no brainer...I needed to do whatever I could to get some practice in. That meant driving 4 hours a day, usually 5 days a week, just to practice. I was not going to let myself down, my teammates down, my country down.
As we headed to Finland to compete, all we needed was to come in the top 3. By doing so, we would then qualify for the 2021 World Championship and keep our goal of earning a spot in the 2022 Beijing Paralympic Games alive.
Not only did we come in the top 3 - we brought home the 1st EVER Gold Medal for Wheelchair Curling to the USA!!! FIRST EVER GOLD!!! It was an incredible, emotional week and one that we will surely never forget. But...there is a lot more work to be done. We still need to rank high enough at this year's Worlds in October to earn enough points to qualify for the 2022 Beijing Paralympic Games. I'm confident, with the way my team is playing right now, that we will arrive at the 2021 World Championships hungry to earn our Paralympic spot.
Don't ever let anyone tell you that you can't do something. Don't just put it in your mind (we all get a little crazy up there sometimes!) but put it in your heart. Be passionate about it and put everything you have into it. Empower yourself to set your goals high and put in the work...you WILL be successful!!!
